Theme Of Revenge In Oresteia - 924 Words
The main focal point in which the Oresteia attempts to convey to its readers is that revenge is a continuous and unending cycle. The concept of an ââ¬Å"eye for an eyeâ⬠is heavily emphasized throughout the story and its characters. Therefore is someone is murdered, than a next of kin or relative will extract vengeance upon the murderer. Which thus turns an attempt at justice into simply another tragedy. And then a new chosen one will then later be selected to seek and obtain revenge on the previous wrongdoer in which the cycle continues. The furies within the play also play a crucial role in demonstrating the ruthless and unending nature of revenge through their methods of torturing and haunting the martyrââ¬â¢s blood-related family for eternity.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For instance, if the United States were to launch a nuclear missile as Russiaââ¬â¢s capital, what would happen? Retaliation. Russia would then do the exact same or possibly even worse directed at th e United States. Our blindness to come to the attention of this seemingly chronic problem within our world has nearly lead humankind to the brink of its own destruction on many different occasions. Of which, the closest humankind has gotten to destroying itself throughout our history was during the brief time frame of the cuban missile crisis during the Cold War. We got so close in fact, that the simple push of a button could have lead to total nuclear annihilation. Therefore, the principle of revenge has been with us in our darkest moments as well as our everyday lives. And even in our legal and justice systems the same principle applies. Why is a man who committed murder given the death penalty? Since when does two wrongs equal one right? These are the questions we must ask ourselves as we examine the meaning behind humankinds need for the extraction of revenge. The idea of revenge has existed as a staple of human civilization for as long as we as a species can remember. The Merchants Tale Essay Example
The Merchants Tale Paper The use of the word ââ¬Ëbutââ¬â¢ in line 843 is the first signal to the audience that there is going to be a significant change within Januarieââ¬â¢s fortune. Up until this point he has been considerably lucky; he is described as a ââ¬Ëworthy knightââ¬â¢ who has ââ¬Ëlived in greet prosperiteeââ¬â¢ and has been married to ââ¬Ëfresshe may, his paradys, his makeââ¬â¢. Through this excessive amount of fortune, Chaucer has led the audience to believe it is too good to be true, and so the change is almost inevitable. Januarieââ¬â¢s fortune is represented by the image of ââ¬Ëthe scorpionââ¬â¢, which smiles with its face while stinging with its ââ¬Ësweete venym queynteââ¬â¢, just as Januarie is deceived into believing he has found stable happiness when he suddenly goes blind. When Januarie becomes physically blind, this becomes a fulfilment of the metaphorical blindness of self-delusion which has afflicted him from the outset. On line 386, the audience are reminded of the proverb ââ¬Ëlove is blindââ¬â¢, and Januarieââ¬â¢s character has been built up to this point as a demonstration of the truth of this saying. At this point in the tale, we have only recently heard Mayââ¬â¢s voice for the first time, (like 770) but we are yet to know much about Mayââ¬â¢s personality from anyone other than Januarieââ¬â¢s perspective. However, the females already mentioned in the tale, such as Abigail, the wife of Nabal and Rebecca, the mother of Jacob all gained their own fortune and power through the use of deception and trickery, inclining the audience to believe that May is going to use similar techniques. The fact that he is being deceived because of both his physical and mental blindness makes Januarie appear vulnerable, and the audience almost begins to pity him, showing that the power balance has shifted abruptly from Januarie to May. The language Chaucer chooses to use contributes to demonstrating this power balance effectively. Fortune is personified in this passage, as is common in Chaucerââ¬â¢s writing. Like a number of abstract qualities which have the female grammatical gender in Latin, the personification is feminised, and she is presented as a woman, often blindfolded, to demonstrate the arbitrariness of her operation, an holding a wheel on which her victims rise and fall. When comparing this image to May, it is clear that she now has full power and control over Januarie. It is not only clear how May has gained power over this passage, but also how Januarie has lost his. He becomes so possessed by jealousy that He nolde suffre hire for to ride or go/ But if that he hadde hond on her alwayââ¬â¢ , ââ¬Ënor anywhere/ Would he allow his wife to take the air/ Unless his hand were on her, day and nightââ¬â¢. Towards the beginning of the tale, it is unlikely that Januarie would have been so possessive over his new wife, as he had enough confidence within himself to prevent any jealousy. When he loses his sight, it is apparent that his self-consciousness becomes particularly strong, once again making him seem vulnerable and helpless, and Mayââ¬â¢s dishonesty only increases Januarieââ¬â¢s lack of power

Radio Censorship essays
Radio Censorship essays In 1978 a radio station owned by Pacifica Foundation Broadcasting out of New York City was doing a program on contemporary attitudes toward the use of language. This broadcast occurred on a mid-afternoon weekday. Immediately before the broadcast the station announced a disclaimer telling listeners that the program would include "sensitive language which might be regarded as offensive to some."(Gunther, 1991) As a part of the program the station decided to air a 12 minute monologue called "Filthy Words" by comedian George Carlin. The introduction of Carlin's "routine" consisted of, according to Carlin, "words you couldn't say on the public air waves."(Carlin, 1977) The introduction to Carlin's monologue listed those words and repeated them in a variety of colloquialisms: I was thinking about the curse words and the swear words, the cuss words and the words that you can't say, that you're not supposed to say all the time. I was thinking one night about the words you couldn't say on the public, ah, airwaves, um, the ones you definitely wouldn't say, ever. Bastard you can say, and hell and damn so I have to figure out which ones you couldn't and ever and it came down to seven but the list is open to amendment, and infact, has been changed, uh, by now. The original seven words were shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits. Those are the ones that will curve your spine, grow hair on your hands and maybe, even bring us, God help us, peace without honor, and a bourbon. (Carlin, 1977) A man driving with his young son heard this broadcast and reported it to the Federal Communications Commission [FCC]. This broadcast of Carlin's "Filthy Words" monologue caused one of the greatest and most controversial cases in the history of broadcasting. The case of the FCC v. Pacifica Foundation. The outcome of this case has had a lasting effect on what w...

Manufacture and Sale of Counterfeit Goods Essay
Manufacture and Sale of Counterfeit Goods - Essay Example Peter Law, in his article, ââ¬Å"A Call for more Sweatshopâ⬠and others who favor sweatshop labor argue that it provides a means of employment for the weaker section of the population which helps the lower income population to lead a better livelihood. In addition, such companies provide employment for women, and that would, in turn, help them to become more independent and self-supportive. While sweatshop labor does provide a means of employment for the people, the mental and physical turmoil endured by the employees is much more than the benefits gained. In addition, the manufacturing of fake goods by itself is illegal as it is a deliberate infringement of the intellectual property rights of companies that produce the original goods. Hence, stricter policies and judicial changes should be introduced to close down companies producing fake goods and help save the lives of millions of women and children who are forced to work under horrendous conditions. The production of fake or counterfeit products is a violation of intellectual property rights and it poses a significant threat to the world economy as both businesses as well as the consumers are at a loss. As mentioned by Goodwin, the intellectual property theft has affected the world economy to the tune of nearly $600 billion a year. The number of fake products being seized is increasing at an alarming rate with a recent report from the EU customs showing seizure of nearly 100 million products in 2001. This illegal trade is part of every sector such as the information technology sector, clothing, toy industry and pharmaceuticals to name a few and the global market of counterfeit products have risen from 3 billion a year to nearly 100 times more (Counterfeiting and Organised Crime). The sale of counterfeit products has risen sharply over the past decade. A recent report shows that both industrial and commercial counterfeiting represents about 5 to 7% of trade in the world.
